Description
Golden, crispy Crab Rangoon are the ultimate party appetizer—creamy, savory crab filling wrapped in a crunchy wonton shell. This easy homemade recipe is quick to make and always a crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened (full-fat recommended)
- 6 oz lump crab meat (canned, drained well, or fresh; imitation crab works too)
- 2 green onions, minced
- 1–2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder or 1 small clove garlic, finely minced
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 24–30 wonton wrappers (square style)
- 1 large egg, beaten (for sealing)
- 2–3 cups vegetable oil (for frying; canola or peanut oil)
- Optional: Sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, plum sauce, or spicy mustard for dipping
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, crab meat, green onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and sugar. Mix gently with a fork or spatula until just blended.
- Lay out wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Keep them covered with a damp paper towel while working.
- Place about 1 heaping teaspoon of filling in the center of each wrapper. Do not overfill.
- Dip your finger or a brush in beaten egg and lightly moisten the edges of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle, pressing out any air around the filling. Pinch the edges firmly to seal.
- Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot and heat on medium to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully add 4-6 wontons at a time to the hot oil. Fry 1-2 minutes per side, turning with tongs until golden brown and crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon onto a paper towel-lined plate.
- Repeat with remaining wontons, working in batches.
- Arrange on a platter and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces. Garnish with sliced green onion or sesame seeds if desired.
Notes
Do not overfill the wontons to prevent leaks. Keep wrappers covered with a damp towel to avoid drying out. For a lighter version, air fry at 375°F for 6-8 minutes, flipping once. You can prep ahead and refrigerate or freeze before frying. Gluten-free and dairy-free adaptations are possible with specialty wrappers and vegan cream cheese.
